Other Ranks, Battalion Company, in Marching Order uniform, circa 1812 -1815

JACKET: Brick-red "madder" melton wool. Raw edges. Single breasted. High collar. Short tails. Oblique-set false pocket flaps. Yellow facings (cuffs, collar, shoulder straps) of lemon yellow wool. White wool turnbacks on tails, tails lined in white wool. (Sleeves were not lined.)
Regimental Lace: White worsted wool with yellow stripe on edge. 10 button loops on front in pairs, 4 each cuff, 4 each back pocket flap.
Buttons: Flat, round pewter. 93 surmounted by crown.
Shoulder tufts: For Battalion companies, white wool. Shoulder wings with white wool fringe edges for flank companies.
KILT: Government (Black Watch) tartan. Box pleats showing green of sett. No kilt pin. 3 to 4 yards were issued for each kilt.
TREWS/Trousers: Undress and New Orleans uniform. Government tartan.
SPORRAN: Black hair with 6 white tassels in brass bells, narrow brass cantle, white buff leather belt with brass buckle. No sporran worn in field, on march or campaign. Worn only for full dress parade.
BONNET: Dark navy blue wool. Cocked up (stiffened). Red tourie at top center, for Battalion company, green for Light Infantry Company, white for Grenadier Company. Dicing of alternating red & white squares only.
COCKADE: Black ribbon, on left side of bonnet towards front.
BADGE: Regimental 93rd brass bonnet badge, on cockade.
HACKLE: White feathers on top, red on bottom for battalion company, green for Light Infantry, white for Grenadier.
FEATHERS: Black Ostrich plumes. Attached left side of bonnet by hackle, curled to fall over to right side of bonnet.
COVER: Of oilcloth, painted black.
"HUMMEL": Undress bonnet and New Orleans uniform. Bonnet as above but no cockade, badge, hackle, feathers.
SHOES: Low quartered. Buckle style. Iron heel plates. Hobnails.
SHOE BUCKLES: Plain, oval, brass.
SPATTERDASHES: (Gaiters or Spats) Black canvas. Worn in field with kilt or trews, not worn in full dress.
KILT HOSE: Wool, red and white diced. No cuff top, not turned down over garter. Full hose for full dress. Hose tops were allowed in field with spatterdashes.
GARTERS: Red ribbon. Ends cut swallowtail (V) shape. Tied in rosette on out-side of leg according to a specified manner, ends worn long to the ankle.
NECKSTOCK: Black leather, stiff. Worn over shirt collar. Buckled or tied in back with black leather or ribbon.
KNAPSACK: Trotter style. Square wood frame covered in black canvas or black oilcloth. White buff leather straps. Black metal buckles. XCIII in white, at center of outside back.
BLANKET: Gray wool. Carried rolled & strapped at top of knapsack.
CARTRIDGE BOX: Stiff, heavy black leather. Wood cartridge core. White buff leather shoulder sling. Worn on right hip, sling over left shoulder, under shoulder strap.
BAYONET SLING: White buff leather. Worn over right shoulder under shoulder strap, over all other accouterments except canteen sling. BELT PLATE: Brass, rectangular, 93rd Regimental insignia.
BAYONET SCABBARD: Black leather. Brass mountings. Worn at left hip from Bayonet sling.
HAVERSACK: White cotton or linen. Worn at left hip, slung over right shoulder under shoulder strap.
CANTEEN: Round, flat wooden. Wooden stopper with leather thong attached. Body painted medium blue. 93 & Board of Ordnance arrow mark above in white on face. Company number & other markings. Sling of russet leather with brass buckle. Worn at left hip, slung over all other accouterments and over right shoulder strap.
WHISK & PICK: Bar-link type. Carried on one of front buttons, above belt plate.
MESS KIT: Kidney ("D") shape. Tin, 3 section. Carried in black oilcloth cover on top-center of knapsack, with white leather strap.
MUSKET: Brown Bess. Flintlock. 3rd Model. .75 calibre.
MUSKET SLING: White buff leather with brass buckle.
BAYONET: 18 inch, Socket mount, triangular blade. Shined.
GREATCOAT: Gray wool. Long caped overcoat. Double breasted. Pewter Regimental buttons. High collar.
UNDRESS JACKET: White wool with yellow facings. No lace. No tails.
HAIR: Not over collar or ears. No facial hair except side whiskers (sideburns).


Other Ranks, Battalion Company, in Full Dress uniform,1812 -1815

PIONEERS

KIT: All as for other ranks.
ADDITIONAL: Broad head axe in harnessed leather sheath. Carried or slung on back.
Brown buff leather apron. Brown or black leather wide belt with brass buckle.
Saw & spade in leather or canvas quiver, slung on back.
Fascine knife in leather sheath carried on belt, left front.
Pioneers were allowed beards.
CORPORALS
All as other ranks. Addition of two chevrons of Regimental lace on right sleeve (both sleeves in flank companies). Worn heraldically improper, that is, the point downwards.
PIPERS
JACKET: As for sergeants, but with regimental lace. Chevrons of rank on sleeve if applicable (Pipe Major was an honourary title only until 1854 - it was equivalent to corporal or sergeant in rank).
BALDRIC, SWORD & SCABBARD: as for sergeants.
SPORRAN: White hair, 6 black tassels, brass cantle, thistle ornament below cantle. Black leather belt. (Worn only in full dress.)
PIPER'S PLAID: Government tartan. Worn over left shoulder. Attached by plain green ribbon fastened to shoulder strap, green rosette behind strap.
PIPES: BAG of Government tartan. Drone ribbons yellow. Banner on great drone fishtail in shape, consisting of Union Jack with a crowned 93 in red in the centre. On the outside small tenor drone a small rectangular banner, white with yellow border, bearing a design of thistles crossed, in black.

All other kit as for other ranks EXCEPT no musket, bayonet, bayonet sling, cartridge box, or whisk & pick.

DRUMMERS
JACKET: As other ranks but of reversed colours (yellow with red facings - however, orders of 1813 stated sergeant�s scarlet & yellow facings, & in 1814 as other ranks - brick red - but many regiments did not follow the order. The order had to be repeated in 1831) but with Regimental DRUMMER LACE (white, having 3 equal divisions, the centre consisting of bars of yellow & black twisted diagonally & in the centre of the 2 outer divisions a crimson coloured stripe) also covering all seams, 5 chevrons each sleeve points heraldic proper (down) evenly spaced down length of sleeve. No shoulder tufts, instead, shoulder wings with lace & lambswool fringe. Lace fringe worn at back of the waist between the 2 buttons, being a white bar with dependent fringe of white alternating with yellow, black & crimson.
(DRUM MAJOR wore broad yellow silk belt over left shoulder, carried a staff. Rank as a sergeant.)
SWORD, BALDRIC & SCABBARD: as for sergeants.
DRUM: Wood or brass rope tension. Red hoops top and bottom. White cords and white leather tabs. Attached or painted front panel of Regimental insignia. Wood drumsticks. White buff leather sling with brass buckles.
BUGLE: Brass. Red & yellow bugle cords.
BONNET: As other ranks but with HACKLE of all white. Undress as other ranks.
All other kit as for other ranks EXCEPT no musket, bayonet, bayonet sling, cartridge box, whisk & pick.
MILITARY (BRASS) BAND - "MUSICK"
JACKET: White wool, yellow facings, otherwise same as other ranks, with shoulder wings.
All other kit as drummers or other ranks, except BALDRIC of black leather with brass mounts. Bonnet hackle red & white.

Other Ranks, Battalion Company, as worn by the 93rd at New Orleans, Dec 1814 - Jan 1815. Left to Right: Sergeant in Marching Order, Private in Greatcoat, Private in Marching Order. The flag is a "Camp Colour", used as identification & as a guidon in marking pivot points during manuever.

DRESS REGULATIONS - CRIMEAN ERA, 1854-1855

JACKET: Brick-red melton wool, well-fulled, heavy weight. Raw edges. Pattern "1836". Single breasted. BACK SKIRTS. TURNBACKS & button not to be seen in front. Lemon Yellow wool Facings (COLLAR, CUFFS and shoulder straps). High Collar forming narrow "V" in front edged all around with white lace, a loop of lace on both sides of neck set in the middle & starting from the front edge of lace & pointed in the back. SHOULDER STRAPS ends squared off & corners cut, edged around in lace, small Reg'tl button near collar. CUFFS, round, with "slash" of red wool scalloped in 3 points, slash set on front of sleeve, scallops pointing toward little finger, 4 loops of lace set on slash equidistant, Reg�tl button on each loop. SHOULDER WINGS of red jacket wool, edged all round with lace & with 5 single lines of lace equidistant apart from shoulder seam edge to outer edge, wings to have thick coarse white woolen tufts at outer edges. POCKET to be let into front right side of jacket behind 3rd from bottom lace loop on the front for cap pouch. Vertically-set FALSE POCKET FLAPS on tails. White wool turnbacks on tails, tails lined in white wool.
LACE: Plain White worsted wool. Loops to be straight pointed. On edges of collar including seam edge at jacket & two collar loops. Edges of shoulder straps. 10 button loops on front, equidistant. 4 each cuff slash. 4 each back pocket flap spaced evenly both ends squared. All edges of wings and 5 single lines on wings evenly spaced. Triangle at back center waist, above tails, between waist buttons. Outside edges of turnbacks.
BUTTONS: Convex, round pewter. 93 surmounted by crown. Crown points to the head.
KILT: Government (Black Watch) tartan. 19th century Box pleats showing green of sett. No kilt pin. Kilt always worn on guard duty.
TREWS: Undress uniform. Government tartan or gray wool. Front fly buttons hidden. Stove pipe legs. High waisted, jacket must overlap top as with kilt.
SPORRAN: Black hair, with 6 white tassels in brass bells, narrow brass cantle, white buff leather belt with brass buckle. Worn on all active service.
BONNET: Feathered bonnet over wire cage, height approximately 12". Bottom edging of black ribbon, narrow. Black ribbon drawstring, functional, tied in bow in center back worn long to shoulder. Dicing of wool alternating red and white only. Black leather chin strap. Six "Fox tails" of ostrich feather to hang down on right side. Waterproof bonnet cover to be carried inside bonnet. When on guard duty bonnets will be covered immediately after sunset, & uncovered, weather permitting, at 8 am.
GLENGARRY:Navy blue wool, red & white dicing only. Ribbons in back worn long, no bow. Black ribbon cockade on left front. Brass Regimental glengarry badge fixed to cockade. Worn in undress or fatigue duty.
SHOES: Full Dress: Buckle shoes (no spats). Plain, black leather. Low quartered. BUCKLES: Plain, oval, brass. All other Dress: Black leather ankle bootee, with spats.
SPATS: White canvas. 8 plain, round, flat white bone buttons each. Leather or canvas instep strap. Not worn in full dress.
KILT HOSE: Wool, red & white diced. Cuff top, turned down over 1/2 the garter. Full hose mandatory for full dress. Hose tops allowed in field with spats.
GARTERS: Red worsted ribbon. Ends cut swallowtail (V) shape. Tied in rosette, ends worn long to the ankle. NECKSTOCK: Black leather, stiff. Worn over shirt collar. Buckled or tied in back with black leather or ribbon. No shirt collar to be visible above stock or jacket collar.
KNAPSACK: Trotter style. Square wood frame covered in black canvas or black oilcloth. White buff leather straps. Black metal buckles. Smaller than 1814 model, with pocket in flap.
BLANKET: Gray wool. Carried rolled & strapped at top of knapsack.
CARTRIDGE BOX: Basic design as Rawles pattern, holds 50 rounds & 100 caps. Stiff, heavy black leather. Wood cartridge core. White buff leather shoulder sling. Worn on right hip, sling over left shoulder, under shoulder strap. Waist belt worn over sling to hold box down.
WAIST BELT: White buff leather. WAIST BELT CLASP of "locket & spoon" style, Brass, 93rd Regimental insignia. White leather flap behind clasp.
BAYONET SCABBARD:1853 Enfield pattern. Black leather. Brass mountings. Worn at left hip from white leather Enfield FROG on waist belt.
HAVERSACK: White cotton or linen. Shoulder strap of same material with brass buckle. Worn at right hip under cartridge box, waist belt over. Slung over left shoulder under shoulder strap.
CANTEEN: Round, flat wooden. Wooden stopper with leather thong attached. Body painted medium blue, stopper not painted. 93 & Board of Ordnance arrow mark above in white on face. Company number & other markings at discretion of commanding officer. Sling of russet leather with brass buckle. Worn at left hip, under waist belt & under right shoulder strap.
CAP POUCH: Natural brown or russet leather. Flap secured with brass stud. Carried in pocket let into jacket behind 3rd from bottom lace loop on right side. Carried on waist belt, right side if in white jacket.
MESS KIT: Kidney ("D") shape. Tin, 3 section. Carried in black oilcloth cover on top-center of knapsack, with white leather strap.
MUSKET: 1853 Enfield 3 Band rifled musket (1851 Minie rifled musket used at Alma & Balaklava).
SLING: White buff leather with brass buckle.
BAYONET: For 1853 Enfield musket. Socket mount, locking ring, triangular blade. Shined.
GLOVES: White, woven woolen or cotton. Worn in Full Dress or on guard duty.
SHOULDER PLAID: Government tartan. Rectangular. Attached back of left shoulder & at right waist. Full Dress only.
GREATCOAT: Gray Oxford wool, heavy. Long caped overcoat. Double breasted. Pewter Regimental buttons. In campaign carried en banderolle over left shoulder, ends tied together on hip with string.
UNDRESS JACKET: White wool. 1854 shell jacket pattern. Collar high. No lace. Sleeves to mid hand, cuffs slit in.
HAIR: Mustachios & beards were allowed in the Crimea. Head hair relatively short.
CORPORALS
All as other ranks. Addition of two chevrons of lace on each sleeve centered above elbow, to form right-angles extending to within half an inch of the seams of the sleeve. Each chevron a double bar of lace with half an inch of yellow showing between & above each bar. Worn heraldically improper, that is the point downwards. On white jacket, chevrons are red.

PIPERS

JACKET: As for ranks, with scarlet wool, except Inverness skirts in front & back instead of tails. Shoulder wings have scalloped edges in 3 rows instead of tufts. Silver buttons, including 3 on each skirt. No lace on jacket, edges piped in white. 3 buttons on each cuff slash. Chevrons of rank on sleeve if applicable (Pipe Major - an honourary title only until 1854 - is equivalent to corporal or sergeant).
WEAPONS & BELTS: Black leather baldric, worn under plaid. Square silver buckle, slide & tip with crowned thistle. Brass hilted broadsword, red cloth basket lining. Scabbard black leather. Black leather Dirk belt with silver buckle, black leather scabbard with silver mounts, Dirk with silver mounts.
SPORRAN: White hair with 6 black tassels & brass bells, narrow brass cantle with edge of black leather, thistle ornament below cantle. Black belt.
PIPER'S PLAID: Government tartan. Worn over left shoulder. Round silver brooch fastening plaid at left shoulder.
PIPES: BAG of Government tartan. Twisted red and yellow drone cords & carrying a number of narrow yellow, blue & green ribbon streamers. Banner on great drone, Union Jack with scarlet circle with 93 in scarlet figures on a yellow ground with a crown above the circle, & under the circle a scroll bearing the words "Nemo Me Impune Lacessit".
HOSE: Red & green diced. Garters as ranks.
SHOES: Low quartered, black leather buckle shoes with square silver buckles.
GLENGARRY: Dark blue (navy) wool with red tourie. Black ribbon cockade. Regimental brass badge on cockade.1 or 2 eagle feathers attached behind cockade. Feather bonnet for full dress.
All other kit as for other ranks EXCEPT no musket, bayonet, waist belt, cartridge box, cap pouch.
DRUMMERS
JACKET: As other ranks but with Regimental DRUMMER LACE (white, having 3 equal divisions; the centre consisting of bars of yellow and black twisted diagonally and in the centre of the 2 outer divisions a crimson coloured stripe) also covering all seams, 6 chevrons each sleeve points heraldic proper (down) evenly spaced down length of sleeve. BUGLE: Brass. Red & yellow bugle cords.

MILITARY (BRASS) BAND - "MUSICK"

Investigation underway. (We CAN say the Kilt was of Royal Stewart tartan.)

DRESS REGULATIONS - INDIAN MUTINY ERA 1857 -1858

JACKETS: DURING THE MUTINY CAMPAIGN worn over or instead of the red DOUBLET was a light brown DUST JACKET of "holland" (coarse linen or cotton in plain weave usually heavily sized or glazed). Low COLLAR rounded at front, of Red Wool. CUFFS of red wool, round, slash of brown holland set on front of sleeve, scalloped edge in 3 points, edged in red wool piping, 3 Regimental buttons. SHOULDER STRAPS of brown holland with Regimental buttons & Regimental numbers 93 in brass near shoulder seam. FRONT SKIRT of jacket rounded & cut away at corners. Jacket was short at hips to accommodate the kilt. 8 Regimental buttons down the front.
DOUBLET: Brick-red melton wool, well-fulled, heavy weight. Single breasted. 4 double INVERNESS SKIRTS along bottom edge of doublet front & back, 2 plain rounded skirts overlapping in center back, white piping on all. Lemon Yellow wool collar, cuffs and shoulder straps. COLLAR 2" high. CUFFS round, yellow wool slash scalloped in 3 points, edged in white piping, 3 Regimental buttons. SHOULDER STRAPS with Reg'tl buttons, edged with white piping, Reg'tl numbers 93 in brass near shoulder seam. WHITE PIPING set in lines in place of the old loop of lace on cuff slashes & skirts, set in line with each button perpendicularly. BUTTONS: Convex, round, brass. 93 surmounted by crown. 7 large Regimental buttons down front. 2 Buttons on the waist behind. 3 buttons on each skirt. 3 buttons on each cuff slash.
KILT: Government (Black Watch) tartan. 19th century Box pleats showing green of sett. No kilt pin. No rosettes. Kilt always worn on guard duty.
TREWS: Undress uniform. Government tartan or gray wool. 1858; trousers of khaki cloth ordered for wear in summer.
SPORRAN: Black hair, approx. 12" long, with 6 white tassels in brass bells, narrow brass cantle, white buff leather belt with brass buckle. Worn on all active service.
BONNET: Feathered bonnet over wire cage, height approximately 12". Bottom edging of black ribbon. Black ribbon drawstring tied in bow in center back. Dicing of woven wool, 3" wide, alternating red & white. Black leather chin strap. Six "Fox tails" of ostrich feather hung down on right side. Waterproof bonnet cover carried inside bonnet. Optional sunshade of quilted white cotton, fixed to rear and back portion of the sides by buttons at top of dicing close to the feathers and tightly drawn so the shade stands away from the head & neck. When on guard bonnets covered immediately after sunset, & uncovered, weather permitting, at 8 am. COCKADE: Black ribbon rosette. BADGE: Regimental 93rd brass bonnet badge, with Cape of Good Hope & Balaklava scrolls underneath insignia. HACKLE:1" taller than bonnet. White Vulture feather.
GLENGARRY: Navy blue wool, red & white dicing. Ribbons in back worn long, no bow. Black ribbon cockade. Brass Regimental glengarry badge. Worn in undress or fatigue duty.
SHOES: In 1857 Full Dress, buckle shoes (no spats), plain, black leather. Square toe. Low quartered. BUCKLES: Plain, oval, brass. In 1858 Full Dress buckle shoes were discontinued. All other Dress: Brogans, black leather military ankle bootee.
SPATS: White canvas. 8 small plain, round, flat white bone buttons each. Leather or canvas instep strap. Not worn in full dress in 1857, worn in 1858 full dress.
KILT HOSE: Wool, red and white diced. Cuff top, turned down over the garter.
GARTERS: Red ribbon. Ends cut swallowtail. Tied in rosette worn long to the ankle.
NECKSTOCK: Black sateen fabric. Worn over shirt collar. Buckled or tied in back with black leather or ribbon. No shirt collar visible above stock or jacket collar.
KNAPSACK: Trotter style. Square wood frame covered in black canvas or black oilcloth. White buff leather straps. Black metal buckles. Smaller than 1814 model, with pocket in flap.

CARTRIDGE BOX: Enfield design, helds 60 rounds & 100 caps. Heavy black leather. Wood cartridge core. White buff leather shoulder sling, brass buckle. Worn on right hip, white leather sling over left shoulder, under shoulder strap. Waist belt worn over sling to hold box down.
WAIST BELT: White buff leather. WAIST BELT CLASP of "locket and spoon" style, Brass, 93rd Regimental insignia.

CAP POUCH: White buff leather. Flap secured with brass stud. Carried on cartridge box sling by white leather sleeve fitting over belt, worn on right center front.
MESS KIT: Unchanged since Napoleonic Era.
MUSKET: 1851 Minie rifled musket used at Alma & Balaklava. 1853 Enfield 3-Band rifled musket issued after. SLING: White buff leather with brass buckle.
BAYONET: Socket mount, locking ring, triangular blade. Shined.
GLOVES: White, woven woolen or cotton. Worn in Full Dress or on guard duty.
ADDITIONAL
In 1858 sun helmets were issued for use. These were of a covered basket work pattern, usually white. NOTE: these were NOT "Balaclava" or pith helmets as seen in the film "ZULU" which are of later 1870's regs.
PIONEERS have white instead of black or brown aprons & a saw-backed sword instead of musket. Also leather gauntlets.
DIRKS and SGIANDUBHS (the latter not before 1853) worn only by officers & pipers in the 1800's.
GREATCOAT: As in Crimea.
UNDRESS JACKET: As in Crimea.
HAIR: As in Crimea.
SHOULDER PLAID: Government tartan. Rectangular. Attached back of left shoulder & at right waist. Full dress only.
EXTRA CARTRIDGE BOX: Worn on right front of waist belt. Black leather.
CORPORALS
As in Crimea. On brown jacket chevrons of red wool.

PIPERS

JACKET: As for ranks, DOUBLET of GREEN wool with silver diamond shaped Reg'tl buttons. Chevrons of rank on sleeve if applicable (Pipe Major was equivalent to corporal or sergeant).
WEAPONS & BELTS: Black leather baldric, worn under plaid. Square silver buckle, slide & tip with crowned thistle. Brass hilted broadsword, red cloth basket lining. Scabbard black leather. Black leather Dirk belt with silver buckle, black leather scabbard with silver mounts, DIRK with silver mounts. SGIANDUBH with silver mounts worn in hose on right leg.
SPORRAN: White hair, 6 black tassels & brass bells, narrow brass cantle with edge of black leather, thistle ornament below cantle. Black belt.

GLENGARRY: Dark navy blue wool. Red tourie. Black ribbon cockade. Regimental brass glengarry badge. 1 or 2 eagle feathers behind cockade. Feather bonnet for full dress (worn on mutiny campaign).
All other kit as for other ranks EXCEPT no musket, bayonet, waist belt, cartridge box, cap pouch.
DRUMMERS
JACKET: As Other Ranks, DOUBLET with Regimental DRUMMER LACE covering all seams, 6 chevrons each sleeve points heraldic proper (down) evenly spaced down length of sleeve. Lace fringe worn at back of the waist between the 2 buttons, of white alternating with yellow, black and crimson.
SWORD, BALDRIC & SCABBARD as for sergeants.
All other kit as Other Ranks, as in Crimea Corporal regs.
DRUM: As in Crimea.
BUGLE: As in Crimea.
SPORRAN: As for other ranks but with only 5 tassels.
MILITARY (BRASS) BAND - "MUSICK"
